 70 Years Manfred Deix

Manfred Deix (1949-2016) will not be forgotten! The exhibition “A echta Deix – Unvergessen! 70 Jahre Manfred Deix” ("A Real Deix - Unforgotten! 70 years of Manfred Deix”) from the 03.02.2019 - February 2020 is a relentless journey through time and the depths of the Austrian soul. The enfant terrible of the caricature scene provokes, shocks and shakes up societal taboos like few Austrian artists before him. Manfred Deix would have turned 70 in 2019. To commemorate this, a large illustrated book “Forever Deix – Der Jubelband” (Ueberreuter Publishers) and a new permanent exhibition with over 120 original cartoons from the Lower Austrian state collections were created. A special highlight is “Die sieben Todsünden von Deix” (“Deix’ Seven Deadly Sins”), the originals of which have not been shown in years. The seven deadly sins and all their human inadequacies have inspired many artists to create their own picture series. The most well known are the engravings by Pieter Brueghel the Elder. The Austrian version by Deix shows a multi-coloured group of Deixian figures: The proud cockerel, the stingy "fat boy", people suffering from penis envy, anger and lust.

A new exhibition concept will be featured in the exhibition from February 2019 on. Special digressions on Deix’ colleagues, cartoon styles and cultural understandings of humour will be added whilst the exhibition exists.

  • "Deix & Friends" - caricatures by colleagues dealing with the work and demise of Manfred Deix
  • "Caricature brut - the opposite of nicely drawn" - Cartoons and drawings by Tex Rubinowitz and the Wilbur cartoons
  • “American vs. Austrian humour”

“Manfred Deix’ cartoons unfold their full potential in their original form. Masterful in their technical creation, their content is a timeless, nasty swan song about the Austrian soul.”
- Gottfried Gusenbauer, Director of the Caricature Museum Krems
